History of Physics Group
Professor Edward Arthur Davis is Chair of the IoP History of Physics Group since 2012.
Born in 26 November 1936 he studied physics at Birmingham University and postgraduated at Reading University, worked in the USA as a post-doc at the University of Illinois (1963 - 1964) and as a scientist at the Xerox Corporation (1964 - 1967).
In the Cavendish Laboratory he was lecturer (1968 - 1973).
He was lecturer in the Department of Physics and a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College.
In 1980 Professor Davis hold the Chair of Physics at the University of Leicester (1980 - 2002). He was dean of the Faculty of Science (1987 - 1990).
He held a Royal Society John Jaffe Fellowship Award
He is Emeritus Professor of the University of Leicester and lectures there to undergraduates in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Professor Edward A. Davis now holds the position of Distinguished Research Fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy
in the University of Cambridge. He was lecturer in its Physics Department (1973 - 1980).
He is currently Coordinating Editor and Letters Editor of Philosophical Magazine a condensed matter physics and materials science journal first published in 1798.
He wrote books: "Electronic Processes in Non-crystalline Materials" with Nevill Mott (1971, 2 edn 1979); Science in the Making, v. I (1995), v. II (1997), v. III (1998), v. IV (1999); J. J. Thomson and the Discovery of the Electron with I. Falconer (1997); Nevill Mott: Reminiscences and Appreciations (1998).
